Life Skills · Program overview

Skills practised together, used in daily life.

Small-group learning for women, youth and community members, shaped around the situations participants want to work through.

Planned activity: small-group sessions with a current estimate of C$800–C$1,000 per session. Topics and delivery arrangements depend on the participants and local needs; no session date is announced here.

Learning through practice

A useful session gives people time to discuss a question, try an approach and learn from one another. That might mean preparing to speak at a meeting, comparing options for a household decision, working through a disagreement or understanding health information.

Participants bring their own knowledge and experience. Facilitators can build on it with exercises that fit the group’s interests, age and circumstances. The purpose is to make room for practice and discussion, not to prescribe how people should live.

What sessions can include

  • Communication: asking questions, explaining an idea and listening to others.
  • Planning and decision-making in household, school or community situations.
  • Teamwork, problem-solving and handling disagreements.
  • Health information and practical rights awareness.
  • Literacy, numeracy or basic financial topics where relevant to the group.

A session should have a manageable focus. It is not a substitute for professional health care, a full education program or vocational qualifications, and it does not promise employment or a particular income.

Working with local facilitators

Friends of VIN Canada supports planned activities with Nepali partners who understand local schedules, language and community relationships. VIN’s experience in women’s education and youth activities provides relevant partner context.

The group and facilitator need to agree what would be useful before choosing exercises. Discussion, role play, paired work and shared planning can make the training easier to relate to than a lecture alone. Topics should remain appropriate to participants’ ages and circumstances.

Planning a session

The C$800–C$1,000 range is an estimate for a small session, not a fixed price. Final arrangements depend on facilitation, venue, transport, materials and participant needs. The charity can answer questions about current plans; this page does not announce enrolment or a scheduled course.

Training should be accessible within participants’ daily responsibilities. Local coordination helps identify a workable time and setting, as well as topics people can use after the session.

Alongside our other work

Water systems, household growing and education support address different needs. Life-skills activities can complement them by offering a place to plan, exchange knowledge and work through practical choices. The connection should follow local needs rather than requiring every participant to take part in every activity.
